Sunshine, smiles and community: Spangdahlem PK Field Day a success

SPANGDAHLEM, Germany – The laughter and excitement of young learners filled the air as Spangdahlem Elementary’s PK students took to the field for their highly anticipated annual PK Field Day. Under bright blue skies, the event brought together students, teachers, military members, and families for a day focused on fun, physical development, and community connection.

Learning Through Play and Movement

Field Day was much more than a day of outdoor fun! It served as an intentional extension of the classroom, providing students with opportunities to learn through active, hands-on experiences. Each activity station was carefully designed to align with the DoWEA Creative Curriculum standards, which support the holistic development of young children through purposeful play and exploration.

From obstacle courses and building experiences to cooperative partner challenges, students engaged in activities that supported key developmental milestones:

• Gross Motor Skills: Running, jumping, balancing, and navigating obstacle courses helped strengthen coordination, body control, and spatial awareness.
• Social-Emotional Development: Team-based games encouraged students to practice sharing, taking turns, communicating with peers, and celebrating one another’s successes.
• Cognitive Concepts: Many stations incorporated counting, color recognition, sequencing, and simple problem-solving tasks, blending academic learning with physical activity.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated enthusiasm, perseverance, and confidence as they moved from station to station, building skills while creating lasting memories with classmates and loved ones.

A True Community Effort

What made the day especially meaningful was the overwhelming support from the 

Spangdahlem community. Parents, guardians, family members, and volunteers came out in large numbers to assist with activities, cheer from the sidelines, and participate alongside their children.

“Seeing the partnership between our school and our families on days like this is what makes the Spangdahlem community so unique,” said Pre-K teacher Melissa Joppich. “When parents show up to support these events, it shows our students that their learning and milestones are valued by everyone around them.”

The event highlighted the strong partnership between home and school, giving families a firsthand look at how DoWEA educators use play-based learning to develop foundational academic, social, and physical skills. The encouragement and involvement from family members created an atmosphere of support that helped every child feel successful and celebrated.

A Picnic to Celebrate

Following the morning’s activities, students and their families gathered together for a picnic lunch on the school grounds. The picnic provided an opportunity for everyone to relax, refuel, and continue enjoying time together after an active and exciting Field Day.

Families shared meals, conversations, and laughter while reflecting on the day’s activities. Students enjoyed spending time with classmates outside of the classroom setting, while parents and staff connected in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

The picnic further strengthened the sense of community that defines Spangdahlem Elementary. “This is such a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only the students’ accomplishments throughout the morning, but also the relationships that help support their growth and successes throughout the school year,” said PK teacher Kyla Senecal.

Memories to Last All Year

As the event came to a close, students left with tired feet, full bellies, and wide smiles after a day filled with laughter, learning, and connection. The combination of beautiful weather, engaging curriculum-based activities, a family picnic, and enthusiastic community participation made this year’s PK Field Day a tremendous success.

More than just a special event, Field Day highlighted the power of community and the value of learning through play, allowing Spangdahlem Elementary’s PK students to strengthen important developmental skills through movement, teamwork, and shared experiences while creating lasting memories that will stay with them long after the school year ends.
